Wondering how much a trip to New Zealand costs in 2027?

Perhaps you’re imagining a few weeks of mountain scenery, vineyard lunches and coastal discoveries. Or you’ve started looking at accommodation and activities, and now you’re wondering what it all adds up to.

New Zealand can accommodate quite different travel budgets. The important thing is understanding what your money needs to cover – and where you’d most enjoy spending it.

At Great Kiwi Trips, that’s where we begin: your interests, your comfort level and the kind of holiday you have in mind.

Here’s a practical guide to the costs, with a little Kiwi perspective along the way.

A quick answer: how much should you allow?

As an initial guide, comfortable mid-range travel could mean allowing approximately NZ$350–$750 per person, per day, excluding international flights.

For 14 days, that works out to NZ$4,900–$10,500 per person, or NZ$9,800–$21,000 for two people travelling together.

That’s a broad planning range, allowing for accommodation, transport within New Zealand, meals and a selection of experiences. Your dates, route and choices determine where your trip sits within it.

Simpler independent travel can cost less. Premium lodges, private touring and special experiences can take the budget considerably higher.

Typical New Zealand Travel Budgets

These are indicative planning allowances, rather than fixed package prices or a claim about what every visitor spends.

Travel Style

Allowance per person, per day

What that could look like

Value-focused

NZD $200–$320

Simple shared accommodation, economical transport, some self-catering and selected paid activities

Comfortable mid-range

NZD $350–$750

Well-chosen hotels, motels or boutique stays, comfortable transport, dining out and a mix of experiences

Premium and luxury

NZD $750–$2,000+

Special lodges, premium accommodation, private transport or guiding, and higher-cost experiences

Based on prices checked in October 2026, these indicative allowances are a starting point for planning your 2027 trip. Actual costs will depend on your dates, availability and chosen arrangements.

For private rooms and rental cars, these allowances assume two adults sharing. Solo travellers may need a higher allowance because accommodation and vehicle costs aren’t divided.

The figures include everyday travel costs within New Zealand. International flights, insurance, entry-document costs and personal shopping sit outside them.

You can travel below these ranges with hostel stays, self-catering and fewer paid activities. They’re a starting point for shaping a holiday, rather than minimum spending requirements.

Where you stay shapes part of the journey

Accommodation in New Zealand can be much more than somewhere to put your suitcase.

It might be a comfortable apartment within walking distance of dinner, a small B&B where your hosts share their favourite local spots, or a lodge where you’ll want to leave an afternoon free simply to enjoy being there.

For an initial accommodation allowance:

Accommodation style

Indicative cost per night

Pricing basis

Hostel or shared accommodation

NZ$30–$90

Per person, per bed

Simple motel or basic private room

NZ$160–$260

Per room, generally for two

Comfortable hotel or well-located apartment

NZ$250–$500

Per room or unit, generally for two

Boutique or premium stay

NZ$450–$900+

Per room or suite, generally for two

Luxury lodge or exclusive retreat

NZ$900–$3,000+

Allowance for two; check the property’s pricing basis and inclusions

These are broad allowances. Location, season, room category and availability can move prices outside them. Some lodges quote per person and include meals or experiences, so it’s worth checking before comparing.

A little local perspective

You don’t need the most expensive room every night.

I might suggest somewhere simpler for a short stop, then put more of the accommodation budget towards a place where you’ll have time to enjoy the setting.

A kitchenette can be useful on a longer stay. A central location might save parking costs and make dinner an easy stroll. Breakfast included at a small lodge could be a highlight; elsewhere, I’d happily send you around the corner to a favourite café.

Those details help us choose where your money will do the most for your holiday.

Getting around: the cost of connecting places

A good New Zealand journey might include a rental car, a domestic flight, a scenic train or a transfer with sightseeing along the way.

You don’t have to choose one way of travelling and stick with it from arrival to departure.

Self-drive rental cars

For initial planning:

  • Standard rental car: approximately NZ$55–$160 per vehicle, per day.

  • Petrol: allow upwards of NZ$3.50+ per litre, with room for fluctuations. Check prices again closer to your trip.

  • Additional costs: parking, insurance upgrades and any applicable one-way or other rental charges.

Vehicle type, dates, hire length and inclusions affect the actual rental price. Larger vehicles and peak-season bookings can cost more than this allowance.

For a couple sharing a NZ$120-a-day rental car, the base hire contributes NZ$60 per person per day, before fuel and other expenses.

I’d also look at when you actually need the vehicle. There’s little benefit in paying for it to sit parked while you spend several days exploring a city on foot.

Campervans and motorhomes

A campervan can combine accommodation and transport, but the full budget needs a little care.

For planning, allow approximately NZ$120–$400+ per vehicle, per day, with substantial variation according to vehicle size, season and rental conditions.

Then account for fuel, campground stays, insurance options and any applicable road-user or one-way charges.

Campervan travel can be great fun if that’s how you enjoy holidaying. Just compare the whole cost, along with how you feel about driving, parking and living in the vehicle.

Domestic flights

An initial allowance of NZ$100–$350+ per person, per one-way flight can help with planning, although short-notice or peak-period fares may be considerably higher.

Check baggage, flexibility and airport transfers before deciding which fare suits you.

Sometimes a flight earns its place by saving a substantial drive. Sometimes the road journey offers exactly the scenery and small-town stops you came for.

Trains, ferries and guided transfers

These are best priced around your particular route and dates.

A scenic rail journey can become a highlight in its own right. A guided transfer might introduce you to places you would otherwise drive past. A ferry crossing may connect two parts of the holiday while giving you time out on the water.

We consider the transport and the experience together.

Food and dining: leave room for the good bits

New Zealand food memories don’t all come from expensive restaurants.

There’s the bakery pie you eat overlooking a harbour. A café breakfast that keeps you happily occupied until lunch. Fresh fruit from a roadside stall, or a vineyard meal you decide deserves the whole afternoon.

Here are some useful starting allowances:

Food or dining choice

Indicative cost per person

Coffee

NZ$5–$8

Bakery or takeaway lunch

NZ$12–$25

Café meal

NZ$20–$40

Casual restaurant meal

NZ$30–$65

Fine dining or tasting menu

NZ$100–$300+

Meal allowances exclude drinks unless specified. Restaurant prices vary, and wine pairings can add substantially to a special dinner.

For a mixture of simpler meals and dining out, NZ$60–$120 per person, per day is a useful starting allowance. Increase it if you enjoy regular restaurant dining, wine or cocktails.

Check what’s already included in your accommodation and experiences before adding separate meal costs.

At Great Kiwi Trips, food recommendations are part of helping you enjoy the places you’re staying. Sometimes the right recommendation is a special dinner. Sometimes it’s knowing which bakery to stop at en-route or before you head out.

Experiences worth building around

Some activities are worth giving a proper place in the budget.

Perhaps you’ve wanted to visit Hobbiton for years. Perhaps a Milford Sound excursion is the day you’re most looking forward to. Or a scenic flight is the experience you’d happily choose a simpler room elsewhere to make possible.

Experience

What to check

Hobbiton Movie Set Signature Tour

Standard tour; transport to the departure point additional

Milford Sound cruise

From NZ$179 for the RealNZ Classic Cruise

Cruise only; travel to Milford additional

Milford Sound coach-and-cruise excursion

From NZ$269 from Te Anau or NZ$292 from Queenstown with RealNZ

Departure point, meals and other inclusions

Small-group wine tour

Allow approximately NZ$200–$450

Duration, tastings, lunch and transport

Scenic flight or helicopter experience

Allow approximately NZ$350–$1,500+

Flight length, aircraft, landings and departure point

Named tour prices were checked in October 2026 and may change. Wine-tour and scenic-flight ranges are broad planning allowances; longer flights and private experiences can cost more.

The inclusions matter. A cruise ticket and a full-day excursion with transport are different purchases, even if both appear in a search for “Milford Sound tours.”

You also don’t need a major paid activity every day. Walks, beaches, galleries, town exploring and scenic stops give a journey variety – and leave you time to enjoy the experiences you’ve booked.

What could a 10- or 14-day trip cost?

Using the same daily allowances from the first table:

Travel style

10 days, per person

14 days, per person

Value-focused

NZ$2,000–$3,200

NZ$2,800–$4,480

Comfortable mid-range

NZ$3,500–$7,500

NZ$4,900–$10,500

Premium and luxury

NZ$7,500–$20,000+

NZ$10,500–$28,000+

These totals are planning calculations, not quoted itineraries. They spread the allowance across the whole trip; an actual quote will account for the number of accommodation nights and the specific bookings.

A 10-day independent journey

A comfortable self-drive trip might combine straightforward accommodation with a few boutique stays, favourite local dining spots and a selection of paid activities.

Where you travel and how many experiences you choose will determine where it falls within the range.

A two-week comfort journey

Two weeks gives us room to mix accommodation styles and experiences: perhaps an apartment in one place, a characterful small property in another, and a special stay where the setting deserves more time.

Self-driving, flights or guided connections can be brought together around your preferences.

For a journey built around special lodges, private guiding or premium experiences, the higher allowance creates more possibilities.

Even here, I’d want to understand what luxury means to you. Privacy, a remarkable setting, generous space and someone taking care of the driving may matter more than a familiar hotel name.

International flights: budget for these separately

International airfares aren’t included in the tables above.

The fare depends on your departure city, dates, cabin, baggage and booking conditions. Live prices for your proposed journey are more useful than a fixed international airfare estimate or currency conversion.

Great Kiwi Trips doesn’t ticket international flights. We can, however, help you think about how your arrival and departure points fit the New Zealand journey before you commit to them.

Flying into one airport and departing from another may suit your route better than returning to where you started.

What else should you allow for?

Your wider holiday budget should also consider:

  • Travel insurance suited to your circumstances and planned activities.

  • Any applicable entry-document fees.

  • Shopping, souvenirs and personal spending.

  • Some flexibility for unexpected expenses or something extra you decide to do.

Fuel, meals and experiences are already represented in the overall daily allowances. If you build a more detailed budget from the individual sections, use that instead of adding it on top.

Likewise, when comparing a Great Kiwi Trips proposal with your whole holiday budget, check the stated inclusions. Your booked arrangements may cover accommodation, transport and activities while leaving meals, fuel or personal spending for you to pay during the trip.

Is New Zealand Expensive?

It can be, particularly if you’re travelling in a busy period or choosing premium accommodation and experiences.

But there are plenty of ways to make thoughtful choices.

You might mix simpler stays with somewhere special, choose a route with fewer costly connections, or save on some days to make room for the experience you’re most excited about.

A less familiar town can add something wonderful to the holiday, too. It won’t always be cheaper, but it may give you exactly the food, scenery or local character you were hoping to find.

That’s where understanding the person and the place helps us spend the budget well.

Let’s work out what’s possible for your trip

You don’t need a finished route or a spreadsheet before getting in touch.

Tell us how long you’re considering, what’s caught your eye and roughly what you’d like to spend. Let us know whether that figure is for one person or two, and whether it includes international flights and everyday spending.

We’ll help you understand what’s realistic, where different choices could help and which experiences are worth building around.

At Great Kiwi Trips, we design and book independent New Zealand journeys around your interests, pace and budget – with local recommendations and a few discoveries you might not have found on your own.

What will your New Zealand journey look like?

Early morning light over still water. A drive where the scenery becomes the conversation. A meal you remember as much for the setting as what was on your plate.

Those moments belong in all kinds of holidays, whether you’re travelling simply or planning something more refined.

Tell us what’s caught your eye, how you like to travel and roughly what you’d like to spend. We’ll help bring it together into a journey that feels like yours.

That’s what we do at Great Kiwi Trips.
