The Rotorua Rumble: My Kiwi Adventure Awaits – and Yours Can Too!

A scenic view of the Champagne Pool at Wai-O-Tapu geothermal area in New Zealand, showcasing steam vents and vibrant mineral deposits.

Kia ora, fellow adventurers!

Now, I’ve had the good fortune to travel all over this little globe of ours, but I have to say, there’s something about Rotorua that just gets me. Nestled in the heart of New Zealand, this place is like a bubbling cauldron of everything I love: breathtaking nature, rich history, and the thrill of new experiences. When I first heard about The Rotorua Rumble – a 3-night escape brimming with Māori culture, geothermal wonders, and adrenaline-packed adventures – I couldn’t resist jumping in.

Now, I’ll be honest: when you first arrive, the air is a bit… distinctive. You might catch a whiff of sulphur (or sulfur, depending on where you're from)—a smell some describe as ‘rotten eggs.’ But don't let it put you off! It fades quickly, and before long, you’ll be too busy taking in Rotorua’s geothermal wonders and vibrant culture to even notice.

So, what’s the deal with Rotorua? Why is everyone raving about this place? Allow me to take you through the highlights of this Rotorua adventure, and I promise you’ll be packing your bags by the end of this post!

Day 1: A Warm Welcome and Māori Wonders

When I landed in Rotorua, it wasn’t just that the air had a certain… character to it. Oh no, my friends, it was the electric energy of the place itself that welcomed me. Rotorua is alive, and I don’t just mean the geothermal wonders that bubble up from the earth – I mean the vibrancy of its people and culture.

I spent my first day strolling through the charming Government Gardens (make sure you snap a selfie by the stunning Tudor-style bathhouse), and Ohinemutu Village, where you can’t help but feel the richness of Māori heritage.

A Maori woman offers a couple various dishes of local cuisine, showcasing a delightful meal together.

But the true highlight? My evening at Te Pā Tū. Talk about an immersive experience! I was greeted with a fierce yet welcoming haka (the Māori war dance), and then treated to a mouth-watering hangi feast cooked underground – it was beyond delicious. The Māori culture here is alive and thriving, and the warm, friendly locals make you feel like you’re part of the family.

Day 2: Geothermal Delights and Spa Soaks

Now, let me tell you something – Rotorua is a literal hot spot. I’m not talking about your average tourist destination; I’m talking about Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu Volcanic Valley, where nature’s raw power is on full display. Think bubbling mud pools, steamy geysers, and lakes in vibrant shades of emerald green. You almost expect to see a dragon emerge from one of those thermal craters!

After all that geothermal madness, it was time to shift gears and tap into Rotorua’s more restorative side. And I’m not talking about your average spa day—I’m talking about the Wai Ariki Hot Springs and their Cultural Wellness Experience, which is next level.

People are leisurely relaxing in a nighttime pool, with ambient lighting enhancing the calm and inviting environment.

This isn’t just about relaxing in warm water; it’s a full-on, 7-step therapeutic journey that taps into the centuries-old wisdom of Ngāti Whakaue culture. You start with the Te Hihiri Blessing Stone (feeling zen yet?), then move through the Wairere Waterfall Showers and the Te Pae Paru Geothermal Mud Lounge—trust me, you’ll never look at mud the same way again. Each step is designed to rejuvenate your body and soul in a way that feels like Rotorua’s magical powers are doing all the hard work for you.

So, after all that geothermal chaos, this is the perfect way to recharge—ready for more adventures, or maybe just a nap. (We won’t judge.)

Day 3: The Thrill Seekers’ Playground

I’m not usually one to go chasing thrills, but Rotorua has a way of tempting even the most cautious of adventurers (me, in this case). If you love adrenaline-pumping activities, this is your playground.

The white-water rafting on the Kaituna River is the perfect rush. Hold on tight as you plunge through waterfalls, all the while surrounded by the lush green beauty of New Zealand’s landscape. I have to admit, I screamed. A lot. But it was so worth it.

A person navigates a raft as they ride down a flowing river, about to embrace white-water rafting at Kaituna, surrounded by lush greenery and clear blue skies.

Then, I had the chance to zipline through the stunning Rotorua Canopy Tours. Feeling like a bird as you soar over towering trees? I’ve got to say, it’s a must-do.

And if you’ve got any energy left (which, trust me, you’ll need to dig deep for), hop on the gravity-powered Luge carts at Skyline Rotorua. It’s all about racing down the mountain while taking in some of the most jaw-dropping views of the city below. I was hooked.

Day 4: Hidden Gems and Farewell

As my Rotorua adventure came to a close, I couldn’t leave without discovering a few of the region’s hidden treasures. The morning was spent exploring the tranquil beauty of Hamurana Springs and the serene Lake Rotoiti. Rotorua may be known for its thrills, but don’t overlook these peaceful pockets of nature. They’re the perfect way to wind down before you head off to your next destination.

A wooden bridge extends over a serene forest pool, surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil nature.

And with that, my Rotorua experience came to a close. But let me tell you, this trip has been nothing short of unforgettable. Whether you’re all about culture, nature, or adventure (or, let’s be honest, all three), Rotorua is the destination that has it all.

A Reason to Return – Something for My Next Visit: The Redwoods Treewalk™

Rotorua’s magic doesn’t fade when the sun goes down. If you’re wondering what’s going on my list for my next visit, it’s definitely the Redwoods Treewalk™. By day, you’ll be strutting through towering 75-metre redwoods, crossing eco-suspended bridges like you're in an adventure movie. But the real showstopper? Redwoods Nightlights.

Imagine walking through a glowing forest, with lanterns floating between the trees, casting an otherworldly glow across the forest floor. Designed by the genius David Trubridge, it’s an experience you won’t forget. It’s mesmerizing, it’s magical—and it’s all eco-friendly.

Next time I’m in Rotorua? You bet I’m coming back for this—because the trees are always better with a little glow.

A charming treewalk high in the trees after dark adorned with lights, nestled among the trees in a serene forest setting.
